One of the most annoying things that can happen with a Windows 10 computer is when it
restarts automatically after an update. It usually happens due to several reasons. It might be
because the computer needs to restart to apply updates and reboot, or it might be because it
has an error that needs fixing.
Windows 10 benefits from many updates, and it is rather reassuring. On the other hand, the
operating system tends to reboot without warning if updates are downloaded and applied
automatically. There are two possible solutions. The first consists, and it is the simplest, of
modifying the time slots during which you use your PC. This guide blog will tell you how to
prevent your Windows 10 computer from restarting after an update.
Set the time slot for PC use
Simply click the Settings icon from the Start button, then go to Update and Security. In the
central part of the window that then appears, click on Change activity hours. Then change the
time slot at which you use the PC so that the computer restarts when you are not working on it.
Note that early editions of Windows 10 do not allow setting a time range greater than 12 hours.
From the Creators Update, it is possible to determine up to 18 hours of activity. Validate
everything using the Save button, and your PC is safe from restart use.
Disable automatic restart of Windows 10
Another solution is also possible to completely disable the automatic restart of Windows 10. Go
to the Control Panel, then go to System and Security > Administrative Tools > Scheduled Tasks.
Then expand the left menu by heading to Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows >
UpdateOrchestrator. Locate the term reboot in the Name column. Right-click on it and select the
Disable feature.
Renaming the wrong file and creating a fake folder
The operation is not quite finished. Then open Windows Explorer (using the [Windows] + [E]
keys, for example). Go to C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Update\Orchestrator
. Rename the Reboot file to reboot.bak, then create a folder naming it reboot. Windows 10 will
never restart again without your permission.
Easy Solution to Prevent Restarting After Updates in Windows 10
The solution here is to go into the Power Options in Control Panel and change there. You can
find Power Options by searching for “Power Options” in the Start Menu. Once you have found
this, open it up and click on Change plan settings near the top of the window.
You will see a few different options, but the one you want to click is “Change advanced power
settings.” When you simply click on Change advanced power settings, you will be prompted with
a text box that explains, “Change settings that are currently unavailable.” Click on Enable for all
settings. When you restart your computer, it should refuse to run the updates and not allow
them to be installed.
Uninstall the updates you do not want to remove an update from your computer, find them in
Control Panel, then click Uninstall or Change/Remove. You can also do the same steps in
Windows Update by selecting View update history and clicking on Uninstall Updates
